Fruit waffle : characteristics and flavors
The fruit waffle, less famous than Liège or Brussels waffle, is equally appreciated and has a considerable potential.
It’s a tasty waffle made with a leavened dough stuffed with a fruit marmalade and sometimes with a pastry cream. It can be enjoyed at breakfast or teatime, for dessert or during a snack.

Information about its origin is quiet blurred. It would have appeared in 1970s and 80s, in Liège and Verviers regions, which have always been recognized for fruit crops. In Belgium and Northern France, we easily find it in traditional bakeries or supermarkets.
Today, this traditional waffle is discovered in the 4 corners of the world, by Belgian expatriates or travelers who have discovered it in our regions. It guarantees great success for taste buds.
Flavors & Tasting
The fruit is the main ingredient which allows many variations. But first tastes appeared are :
From now on there are new flavors such as strawberries, raspberries, currants, choco-pears, … Or others with pastry cream : pineapple cream, chocolate cream, …
In Belgium it is usually eaten cold or slightly reheated in a toaster. Rare are the additional toppings added above, it is really delicious plain.
Related waffle maker
The appropriate machine is a waffle maker fitted with a cast iron mold made of flat teeths. Moreover the interior empty space is larger. The purpose is to bake (and sear) only the dough and avoid to crush the fruit.
It is a technical waffle to make but it requires few simple ingredients: flour, yeast, fat and fruit. Before getting a good result, it takes time and training.
This waffle has no limit of creativity ! For example, specific and local fruits in a foreign country work very well and can be a very good idea.
